Mr Smith is Senior Advisor, Aboriginal Affairs and Special Projects with Chevron Australia, providing advice and guidance on Aboriginal employment and retention, workforce cultural awareness and key activities in support of the company’s Reconciliation Action Plan.
EON Chair Caroline de Mori said EON was privileged to have Mr Smith join its Board. “He brings valuable cultural knowledge and extensive experience in engaging with communities across the regions in WA and NT in which we currently work. As we increase our focus on the recruitment, retention and development of our Aboriginal employees, we look forward to drawing on his vast experience and insights to help continue the successful delivery of our program to remote schools and communities.”
Mr Smith said he was delighted to be joining the Board of the EON Foundation. “EON’s program offers a true partnership with Aboriginal communities and their schools to develop and grow edible gardens as a secure local supply of healthy fruit and vegetables, alongside nutrition education about healthy food choices. Their long-term approach also focuses on empowering the community with training and employment opportunities – these can have life-long benefits in terms of building confidence and capacity for future engagement in the workforce.”
Born on a remote pastoral station in the East Pilbara, Mr Smith grew up with strong connections to the land, and to the local Banjima and Gurama people. He has worked in State, Commonwealth and Territory Government Agencies, as well as the resource and energy industries.
Through collaborations with both industry and government, throughout his career he has worked to improve social justice outcomes as well as employment, training and education opportunities for all community members.
Mr Smith officially took up his appointment to the Board on 14 May 2020.
